Being short, round-faced, and bespectacled, Daphne looks young for her age and always has. She often keeps her long, straight, black hair braided to keep it out of her way, which is an eminently practical choice but certainly not one that makes her look any less young. Though it's not immediately obvious to everyone because of her glasses and the fact that she rarely gets near to people, her eyes are not brown or black, as is commonly assumed, but a deep blue verging on purple. It is clear to anyone who watches her long enough that she is also a bit on the fragile side physically.
Character Type: Librarian
Personality:
Daphne is one of the gentlest people around. She loves Pokémon, but she isn't much of one for battling; mutual help and companionship is much more up her alley. When she was younger, she was cripplingly shy, though time and the influence of certain extroverts she is close to have mellowed this trait far enough that she can now be better described as merely quiet and polite.Likes:
If you can find her (and she's usually somewhere in the library, accompanied by at least one Pokémon), she's likely to be enormously helpful with any questions concerning her domain. She loves to help others out however she can. For this reason, she has memorized the best answers to most of the questions she is most often asked, and would happily direct people to a reference if they ask something she doesn't know off the top of her head.
One of the reasons her Pokémon are usually with her when she wanders about the library is that she likes their companionship; most are Psychic-types, intelligent, and good listeners, so they are useful sounding boards for ideas. Another is that she is not terribly tall or strong, so having a psychokinetic Alakazam or a levitating Mismagius about means some help with the unfortunate confluence of heavy books and high shelves. While being crushed by falling books would be some sort of fitting irony, Daphne would really be ever so much happier about not being badly injured or killed.
When Daphne was younger, she was very easily intimidated and bullied into silence. Recently, she has come up with a workaround for dealing with tough-type students who disregard the library's rules: she has a certain list of extremely polite but very firm "scripts" which she can fall back on when her regular responses freeze up. She might still be frightened, and if it becomes very difficult she might hide in a back room and cry later, but the person threatening her doesn't need to know that.
- Cooking - Daphne absolutely loves to make food. It's creative, and with enough skill (which she has amassed plenty of) and a bit of luck, it's delicious. And who's going to argue with cookies?
- Handicrafts - The idea of making something useful appeals to her practical side. If she carries supplies for making things to places, then she can have something to occupy her hands and her time if nothing is going on. And, again, making stuff is just plain fun.
- Music - She can't sing well, and her voice is very quiet, but she plays the flute in private. Sometimes words just don't cut it to express an emotion.
- Children - Daphne grew up the oldest of so many children that some people might have gotten disillusioned with the concept of kids. Daphne is not "some people." She got to be very good at interacting with kids and loves it. Plus, kids are fun.
- Pokémon - Psychic-type Pokémon are her favorite, but Daphne really loves all types. She find their companionship to be a delight, especially when humans get tiring.
Dislikes:
- Wasting time - There are only so many hours in a human life, and Daphne does not want to waste hers on being bored and unhelpful. Her time might be spent on making things, learning things, improving things, or building relationships with those who matter to her, but she cannot stand the idea of spending it on things that are neither useful nor delightful.
- Working out - Daphne is naturally a bit fragile of body, and she is not comfortable with what might happen if she were to push her limits. Combine that with her dislike of wasting time on things that do not strike her as useful or meaningful, and you may see why there are no weightlifting championships in her future.
- Nosiness - Some things are just private, you know? Daphne doesn't like it when people try to pry into private things uninvited. It tends to go badly, and--especially after certain formative experiences in her life--just generally sets her on edge.
- Anger - It's very unpleasant, being around angry people. Daphne particularly hates it when people are angry at her. She herself is very slow to anger, and when other people are blowing up at her she tends to become very cowed.
History:
Nobody knows exactly where Daphne was born, or when, or to whom. She was no longer with her birth parents by the time she was a year old, and to this day she has no idea why. What evidence there is suggests that she was probably born in the springtime, and that she might have not been entirely ready to be born.Dorm: She's not a student anymore, but when she was, she was in the Mana Dorm.
This odd mystery notwithstanding, the thing that stands out most about Daphne's childhood is how very happy her family life was. She was adopted by a lovely couple by the name of Wright: Melody and Tirzah Wright. Melody was a policewoman, and Tirzah worked in the city's famous gardens. Both of them were doing what made them happy in life, and when they adopted their first child--who was then known as David--they did so intending to raise one who would have every opportunity to be just as happy and fulfilled. So when David began to express unhappiness with being treated as a boy, they listened and reacted accordingly, ultimately agreeing that she was a girl and would be called Daphne from then on.
It wasn't long after that that another child was adopted: a little girl, only a year old, named Maya. Daphne loved being a big sister, and became very close to Maya. They did come into conflict occasionally, as siblings often do, but for the most part they got along famously. Maya turned out to be much louder and more excitable than Daphne.
When she started kindergarten, Daphne was the quietest student in her class. She went largely unnoticed for a while, which suited her just fine: she had more fun playing by herself than joining in on a game of tag. (It is not irrelevant that the one time she did try to join in on such a game, she ended up getting knocked over and hitting her head on a metal pole. After that, she determined that it was just not worth the chance of a repeat experience.) Her quietness, however, eventually attracted the notice of a certain kind of bully which likes to pick on anyone unlikely to fight back. Daphne was in many ways their idea of the perfect target: not social enough to make friends who could defend her, too quiet to tell them off or tell on them, not fast enough to run away effectively, and both too gentle and not strong enough to fight them off. Because of this, Daphne ended up becoming even more reclusive, in an attempt to implement the conventional wisdom the adults at the school gave her: "ignore them and they'll go away." Suffice it to say, they did not go away. And on top of all that, a whisper about Daphne began to spread among the teachers, many of whom began to treat her badly themselves.
School was increasingly nightmarish, but Daphne's home life continued to be wonderful. Her mothers worried about her, but there was little they could do about her school situation. However, little everyday happy things continued to happen, and Daphne was delighted to hear soon after that her mother Melody was going to have a baby.
The baby was named Vivian Cordelia Wright, and she was adorable. She looked very much like Melody, and grew up to be quiet and dreamy like Daphne--though Vivian was much more robust of build, which made it possible for her to actually enjoy sports and like physical activity.
Elementary school, for its entire length, was full of trouble for Daphne. When Maya joined her in school, the little sister took to speaking up for her big sister when she could, whenever they were in the same place.
When Daphne was eleven, her mothers adopted another child: Kyoko, a ten-month-old orphan girl. Prior to that, Daphne had been considering going off on a traditional Pokémon journey, but the risks were substantial--particularly considering that she was so shy and weak. It was the sort of thing that might make her stronger, but might also kill her, and the risk of the latter was really uncomfortably high. Bringing a new baby into the family sealed the matter: Daphne was needed to help out at home. It was a bit disappointing, as she had wanted to try out independence and bond with Pokémon, but she loved her new sister and the ones she already had, and in some ways it was a relief to not have to worry about whether or not she was going to live to see them all again.
A year later, Daphne's mother Tirzah gave birth to one more child, a girl who was called Tania Jessica when she was born and Nia ever after. Daphne, Maya, and Vivian all put in some help with the little ones. It was busy but happy for them all.
When Maya was eleven and the busyness was getting less, she set out on her Pokémon journey. Daphne made her little sister promise to send her emails sometimes from Pokémon Centers, and tried not to be too obvious about crying when Maya left the city. She would be back, of course, but... not as often.
The house was so much quieter without Maya to be constantly delighted about everything, and when her letters home began to arrive, Daphne started to wish once again to have a journey of her own. Around that time, her mothers heard news of a different sort of opportunity: a Pokémon academy which would provide a measure of safety while allowing her a greater degree of experience and independence. It sounded like an excellent compromise, and Daphne ended up attending.
On her first day, she was allowed to choose her first two Pokémon--out of just about any Pokémon she liked. She selected a little Gothita, whom she named Ginevra after a legendary queen, and a Misdreavus, who was given the name Annabelle after a figure from a poem. With those two by her side, Daphne set out to begin her life as a Pokémon Trainer and a student at the academy.
Only a short time later, she happened by chance to meet a student from a different dorm whose name was Cassius Yossarian. Once they had cleared up an initial miscommunication which had briefly led Daphne to think that Cassius was a ghost, they became fast friends. The academy was very different from Daphne's previous school.
Daphne's experience there was everything she could have hoped for, and many things that it would never have occurred to her were even possible. She found her way about the school and particularly its library, learned to study and (with a bit of help required the first time) how to battle and catch wild Pokémon, and even made a few more friends. And, in a slow and gentle way, she fell in love--with Cassius, the courteous student from the Nature Dorm who was not, in fact, a ghost.
It was entirely by accident that Daphne discovered that her non-ghostly friend had a very strange problem, one that was so alien to her experience that she didn't even understand what was going on at first. When she finally realized what was going on, they had a very long talk which ended with Daphne feeling like she owed her mothers significant thanks for raising her with the goal that she would grow into whatever life made her happy and fulfilled, rather than with the goal that she would fit into a very specific box chosen in advance of her birth.
After that, Daphne and her girlfriend Cassius could be seen wandering around and often studying together. Studying what varied; sometimes it was even something they had been assigned.
Time passed. School happened. Life happened. Eventually, graduation also happened.
Setting out into the world, Daphne and Cassius purposed to stick together. They both had things which it interested them to do, and for a year or two they did just that in pursuit of future goals. Then they heard tell that the academy where they had studied was hiring. Daphne loved the idea of being able to do something useful there. Though she suspected that she would not be a good teacher for students bigger and stronger of will than herself (meaning that anything above the elementary level was out), she chose to take a job as a librarian. An easy choice, really. It suited her perfectly. And her girlfriend was going to be in the vicinity, too...
