Name: Joel Hayden Battles
Age: 15
Date of Birth: November 5th
Birthplace: Fortree City
Gender: Male
Sexual Orientation: Bisexual
Face Claim: Scott Pilgrim, Scott Pilgrim
Appearance:
Distinguishing Features: N/A
Height: 5'10
Character Type: Student
Personality:
Joel carries himself as happy-go-lucky and carefree, with no clear goals other than to have as much fun as humanly possible. He sees pokemon training as a hobby and is frequently seen trying to train them to sing and play instruments (attempts that rarely ever succeed), and appears to be immune to sadness or anger, reacting to both with sarcasm and avoidance, but actually tries desperately to hide his own depression by occupying himself constantly so as to forget it even exists. While he is sometimes prone to snapping, he generally does an effective job at keeping his cool up until the very end.
Joel's aforementioned sarcasm is a side-effect of his own sense of humor, which can be described as deprecating, observant, and somewhat obnoxious at times. He appreciates such humor in others as well, and frequently engages in debates with similar people for fun. His tongue is sharp, and he delights in saying whatever he can to get ahead, specifically clever things.
Joel is very social as well, preferring to surround himself with many people at a time. Despite this, he is somewhat of a wallflower, choosing to observe the way other people behave and casually cracking jokes instead of being the center of attention or the class clown. He talks alot, but prefers conversations with another person as opposed to many people at once.
His interests tend to take him over and, as a result, Joel appears to shirk all responsibility and duty in favor of enjoying himself, but prides himself in stepping up when he is actually needed (which isn't often). He loves his pokemon, and treats them all like family, spending nearly all of his time with them doing some kind of activity.
Joel's biggest quirk is that he talks to himself when he's alone, using his own obnoxious humor and imagination to keep himself occupied. He often forgets just how loud he can be, and is frequently overheard by other (very confused) peers. He is very much an extrovert and has a tendency to say what he's thinking without much regard for the consequences. He is very self-aware about this, however, and it's more of a habit than anything else.
Despite his outward personality, however, Joel appreciates solitude when he can get it and is very self-conscious about being liked. While he lacks restraint, he typically finds himself regretting saying certain things and assuming the worst when someone doesn't laugh or respond. He's an incredibly flawed teenager who lacks the motivation to do anything with himself, choosing to screw around instead.
Likes:
Music - Whether it be performing in front of crowds, playing in solitude, writing, or trying to teach it to his pokemon, Joel's passion lies almost solely in music. When he isn't training his pokemon, battling for fun, or enjoying other activities, he is almost always doing something music-related, as it's the only thing that commands his absolute attention.
Humor - Joel pretends to lack the emotional capacity to take things seriously and, as a child, began to make jokes and observe things he thought were funny. Eventually, he grew to do this habitually and almost automatically, taking note of how much better it makes him feel despite his understanding of how it affects others.
Debating - From a purely social perspective, Joel loves to argue with people and attempt to outdo them. He typically uses his humor and capacity for semi-clever comebacks to achieve this, and is somewhat incapable of knowing when to stop, or when he's lost. He will devote his time to proving a person wrong, and is oblivious to how much it alienates people around him. Joel does it to fuel the ego he knows he has, and because he finds it intellectually stimulating and fun.
Sweets - It's hardly surprising that Joel has a sweet tooth. He hates candy in almost all forms, but is rarely seen without pastries, coffee, or soda. Beginning as an interest in rewarding his pokemon for doing well, it rapidly turned into what is probably a hopeless addiction.
Water-types - According to Joel, water-types are the only pokemon that aren't a legitimate threat to his safety.
Reading - In his lifelong mission to outsmart everyone and come out on top, Joel found that the way to do this was to read everything he could get his hands on and fill himself up with so much knowledge that his head would burst. So, unsurprisingly, all he usually reads are books on music, and books on pokemon training and battling. One will occasionally see Joel carrying around a history book or a novel, but they never actually get opened up.
Teaching - Joel takes himself too seriously and likes to project his self-proclaimed wisdom onto other people. While there certainly are things he has satisfactory knowledge about, his lack of understanding of other things make people take him way less seriously than he likes.
Dislikes:
Non water-type pokemon - Fire-types can burn him, psychic types can read his mind, bug-types are disgusting, grass-types probably have bug-types on them, and so on. This is more of a facade he puts up, however, as he recognizes the strategic necessity for having more than one type of pokemon on his team.
Losing - Obviously, Joel doesn't take well to being outsmarted or beaten. When put through such things, he suffers from internal temper tantrums that typically take the form of yells or insults.
Physical confrontation - Joel tries his best to make people feel bad and leave before things escalate to physical fighting. He has no real skill in that field, and considers the battle lost as soon as it reaches that point.
Being the center of attention - While he's known to shoot verbal spitballs, he prefers to do it from the sidelines or out of earshot of multiple individuals so that he doesn't get called out and forced into a confrontation.
Hypocrisy - His hatred for liars and hypocrites is obvious (because he makes sure everyone knows), despite being an absolute hypocrite himself.
History:
Joel was born into poverty, the son of a shop clerk and an unemployed mother in Fortree city. As a young child, he had very little and was virtually ignored by his parents, instead being left with a sitter while his father worked, and while his mother repeatedly trekked to Lilycove city to buy lottery tickets with the much uninspired hope of striking it rich. When he was eight years old, however, his mother’s borderline pathetic efforts paid off, and they became wealthy almost overnight. Joel’s father reacted to this stroke of luck by quitting his job, packing up the family, and moving down to Lilycove, where they lived for several more years.
Joel lived comfortably, despite continuing to be ignored by his mother and father. To keep him distracted from their rich lifestyle, they paid for him to take music lessons and got him classes with instructors for pokemon training, making his life consist of an activity he loved, and an activity he hardly enjoyed. Despite this, he made friends (that mostly stayed around him due to the sizable allowance he received from his parents). Their lack of interest in him and obsession with his money led him to begin fashioning his demeanor around what they seemed to approve of, and due to their enthusiasm (again, thanks to his wealth), he began seeing himself as a guy with a winning personality. After receiving Poochyena, his first pokemon, Joel quickly learned what genuine affection was, beginning to shut out his painfully few friends in favor of spending time with his newfound companion. He soon learned that his parents had put aside money to send him away to a school for pokemon training, and began taking training more seriously, though he never truly found himself enjoying anything other than success in battles and quality time with his companion.
One day, while taking his Poochyena to see one of Lilycove’s pokemon contests, he discovered his mother gambling on said contests, and losing. This was the first and last he had seen of this, however, as he was soon forced to part ways with his beloved pokemon friend, offering him to a shelter, knowing that his parents would not care for him. This had little effect on him after he began bonding with his pokemon in Gray Garden, though he refuses to go near other Poochyenas in remembrance of the friend he had left behind.
Since entering the academy, Joel has found his passion in things other than Pokemon, and training soon found itself lower on his list of priorities for several years. Despite this, Joel managed to scrape by pretty effectively, slowly becoming more committed to the training of his pokemon. Now, he trains and spends time with them almost obsessively, finding satisfaction in doing so. Despite his love for his pokemon, however, Joel does not let it get in the way of his desire to have as much fun as he possibly can, and to be less lonely and unfulfilled than he was back in Lilycove City.
