Appearance
Luka is a strapping young lad from the isles of Dewford, looking the part very well. From the top of his head, he has thick, luscious red hair growing from his scalp, ungroomed and just going with the flow of his roots. Usually, it tends to be kept by the ears in the front and down the neck in the back, having a full head of hair. Under that as his thin eyebrows and white-sclera, red-iris eyes, along with his smooth nose. At the bottom of his face are his clean, full set of adult teeth and his rounded chin, giving his face its definitive shape. His skin is of a tannish pigment due to being out in the sun all day, unblemished which some say is thanks to the daily doses of salt water.
Unlike others, his body shows years of hardwork, not like some slouch who's been watching cartoon undersea adventures. He's the real aquaman, with his defined pectorals leading down to his toned set of abdominal muscles. Very unashamed of show it off, it's very common to find him wearing open or loose clothing. It's usually some kind of hoodie or button-up, accompanied by some sort of graphic that depicts his hobbies or artistic choices. His body is naturally hairless for whatever reason, giving him more confidence to not hide it from others.
Downstairs, he prefers to wear baggy shorts or swimwear, always wanting to be ready for when he can go into the water. He also enjoys the idea of being able to move freely, not wanting to be restricted from anything. Continuing with that, he'd go out barefoot if he could, no matter what mess would become of his feet. It's just natural to him and where he was from, but if he had to choose a type of shoe, it'd be sandals. The feelings of socks of him are just unnatural and uncomfortable, so he avoids them at all costs.

Personality
Although he appears rather passive and carefree at a glance, there's a lot people don't tend to notice about Luka. At first, he seems calm and relaxed with whatever happens, but there are times when he gets worked up and serious. He's one of those types to hear someone say something wrong and automatically retort in offense, even if it wasn't towards him. He doesn't like the idea of someone getting their feelings hurt, kind of like a 'do unto others as you wish they do to you' type of thing. It's a nice little moral code that keeps him happy and friendly, expecting those around him to keep the same vibe. Of course, it's not always useful to be passive, sometimes missing the point of subtle or delicate thing that may be important.
One thing someone will sooner or later learn about him is the overbearing stubbornness he can bring to the table. It comes to such a surprise that someone who 'goes with the flow' would have such a hard time budging to others suggestions. It's something about his resolve and how he goes about doing what he wants, with the confidence that he can do it. Challenging that stubborn mindset is something of an insult to his ability, usually met with a bit of unintended scorn whenever it were to happen. He's not usually very defensive of what's going on in his life, but presenting it incorrectly does irk him majorly. Some things are best left unsaid at the moment they happen.
Due to how he was raised, it's rather common to see him trust someone he'd been talking to for about five minutes, assuming the conversation is any good. While especially friendly, he's not dumb enough to think these people as his friends just yet. Soon enough, however, as he's always got time to do things and is more than a social person. Don't be taken aback if by the end of talking to him, he asks if you wanna grab a bite to eat or hit the waves. It's just the way things worked for him back home and there's no reason to change it as of recently. If anything, it's just his way of saying he's free and always open to talk.
Trusting someone isn't always the smartest decision, however, as he's not too keen on deception. While he can't see it coming, he's not daft or anything like that. Just not something he's been used to as a person, thinking other people mean well at all times. He has had his feelings hurt thinking other people are all fine and dandy, but that hasn't pulled him away from them. Seeing as he knows what it's like to argue and fight with people, he'd rather avoid these situations, due to the aforementioned stubbornness. He can certainly get nasty when he wants to, but that's not a part of his personality he really enjoys.
Depending on the situation, he can actually be really excited about what's going on, taking it to the extreme both verbally and physically. He doesn't like to run his mouth about things. . . he loves it. If there's something he finds amazing to brag about, expect him to go on about it for the entire week, let alone not stop talking when it happens. Being used to a bit of childish actions, he'll even stomp his feet or jump around during these types of things, all while grinning stupidly. There's just something about those moments that make you realize you're there, living them, right now. Everything about that is just way cool to him, as if that was hard to see.
If there's one thing he has a lot of, it's ambition, as seen when he's doing his hobbies or when he's really enjoying some schoolwork. It's not unusual to see him put his best foot forward when trying to accomplish something, even if he tries again and again without succeeding. During training, he'll stick to one aspect and that aspect alone, which some might consider silly if it's the hundredth try with no real progress being made. Just the type of person he is to push himself and get motivated to do what he wants, by pure inspiration of willpower. Some things just can't be willed, however, but he'll have to figure that out in time.

History
Growing up on the sandy shores of Dewford sure does a lot for a person, living in an open and welcoming community. Luka lived a very comfortable home life, his parents would hand the world to them if they could. Instead, however, they gave him the confines of the island to explore, which was more than enough for a child. Ever since he could remember, he's been crawling around the sands and into the sea. He knew how to swim before he could walk, having always felt natural in the water. Given the permission to roam their hometown as he pleases has given him quite a lot of fond memories of it.
Even though they lived a very open lifestyle, it wasn't uncommon for him to be scolded by his parents. At first it was a daily thing, then as he grew up it became weekly, then monthly. Soon enough, he'd managed to learn how to behave himself around others, even at a young age. These kinds of things, knowing the do's and don't's of life as his parents did, made him very used to being sociable. It was just how things were done, being out all day and coming home to a nice family conversation. Ohana means family, and family never gets left behind, you see.
A great part of their culture was the social gatherings and events that took place every night. Whether it was inside or outside didn't matter, being used to things like dancing with others or just talking about the day. It was nice to have such strong relationships with one another, definitely made it easy to ask for things. It's the way he got his first surfboard even, watching as someone was about to throw their old one away. He'd seen guys and girls tackle the waves all day and all night, something he'd always thought was cool. Plucking up his courage, he made this little fact known and managed to convince someone into giving him their old board. Even got a few lessons since his mom knew their family well enough, making it easy for him to get into it.
Practicing on his surfboard day in and day out, he'd slowly get more used to everyone else's daily routine, being able to spectate from far away. Although he wanted to take everything one day at a time, being a child meant having a lot of energy to spare. A good outlet for that happened twice a week in the form of martial arts training right there on their local beach. Dewford was pretty famous for it's long and ancient traditions of fighting, something some might observe and put under the banner of the new and popular sport of Pokken. They didn't get amazing reception out there, but he'd watch Pokken fighters battle it out, man and 'mon having each other backs.
One day, he'd decided to join into their little group, sneaking in towards the back as to not be seen. No one really minded a childs participation in their work-out, it just wasn't expect that it'd become a regular thing. He really enjoyed himself learning holds, locks, and strikes that the ancient people of their island developed. However, it was pretty dangerous to be practicing with other trainers pokemon, considering he hadn't been one himself. This eventually lead to him breaking his wrist trying to get out of a Machop's hold on it, instead of just tapping out. He never blamed them for his own stupidity, being set back in the curriculum since he couldn't participate.
These were all things he continued up until his teenage years, when it was brought up what he'd do with his life. There was never any clear decision, but he had heard of an academy teaching young trainers right here in his own region. Like any native of Dewford, he was one to keep up with trends and didn't mind the idea of going abroad to study. Everyone said it'd broaden his horizons, so why not? Sending in his application to enroll, within a few short days a leter of acceptance was issued in his name. After a few rigorous days of packing and goodbyes to the people he'd know since forever, the boat was soon right on their docks. It was a bit hard to do, but he'd walked onto the ship and towards his new destination, the Gray Garden Academy on Harmonia Island.
