Personality: DJ is a rather optimistic individual bordering on naïve, well less bordering more diving headfirst into naïve. He lacks common sense and can easily fail some remarkably simple tasks and is easy to take advantage of due to his trusting nature. Despite this he is quite bright and good at puzzles and problem-solving, math, deduction, induction, reading people and interpreting scenes. He is however horrible at some more creative right-brain functions such as playing music and drawing (he should never be allowed near a pencil and paper) and speaking foreign languages (he speaks his own quite well however). The only artistic outlet he shows any promise in is photography which he mostly applies to crime scenes for his detective work but is also accomplished as a recreational photographer.
Despite all these shortcomings he is a rather kind and noble person, almost to a fault. He is stupidly and stubbornly self-sacrificing for the greater good and will always do the right thing despite how little sense it makes. This tendency can either inspire others to amend their ways or consider him a fool (sometimes both).Overall he is an optimistic person with a naïve sense of justice and a great desire to fulfill it despite little means or practicality to do so.

History: DJ grew up in Jubilife City with his mother, father and older sister Emma. As a boy he wasn’t particularly good at making friends but loved reading and writing stories, particular mystery and detective stories, a fascination that quickly spread like wildfire. He idolized the International Police and their mascot “Dr. Sleuth”, a hard-boiled detective in a trench coat that Interpol put out specifically to appeal to kids. He owned all the Dr. Sleuth merchandise and watched all the commercials and cartoons, dreaming of one day becoming an Interpol Police Officer like him. This dream persisted much to the dismay of his parents while his sister got the more respectable and realistic position of being an assistant to a pokemon professor. However the cheesy do-good words of Dr. Sleuth continued ringing in the boy’s head and informed his stupidly noble character.
When he was old enough he began making plans to get his first pokemon from the lab his sister worked at, however things didn’t go as planned. The night before he was to receive his starting pokemon he got a pained call from his sister that the lab had been robbed and to get help. He immediately called the police and made the ultimately foolish decision to head to his sister’s lab to try and help. When he got there he found a criminal team had stolen all the starting pokemon and he was instantly found by the delinquents. He demanded that they return the pokemon, telling them the police were on their way. The criminals laughed him off, saying that the police weren’t coming because they had paid them off. Refusing to believe such a thing DJ stood up to the criminals himself… and was quickly stomped down as the criminals and their pokemon gave the boy a savage beating for his insolence.
With barely an ounce of strength left in his young body he still attempted to grasp the criminals’ coattails, demanding they give back the starting pokemon and not deny dozens of budding children their chance to become trainers. The criminals left, only leaving the boy alive because they weren’t sure their bribe would cover them in case of murder. Beaten and disillusioned, it took a long time for DJ and Emma to mentally recover from that night. Needless to say he didn’t become a trainer on schedule but still felt guilt for his powerlessness to do anything against the criminals. Rather than killing his dream, discovering the corruption among Interpol intensified it, the way he saw it if the world wasn’t going to meet his idealistic expectations than it was just his job to make it better, after all a bad world wasn’t going to get any better if you didn’t put good people into it. With the regular route as a trainer most likely out and his desire for education as well as strength he decided to attend Gray Garden Academy, still with the desire to become a noble hard-boiled Interpol Officer like Dr. Sleuth.
