Distinguishing Features:
The most striking thing about Annie's appearance, the moment you see her, is her long, silvery-white hair. It used to be black, not that anyone who's only met her recently would know that. She doesn't dye it; she doesn't mind people knowing that her hair went naturally gray in her early teens, though she doesn't like to tell them why. As for her other attributes... it's a bad idea to get into Pokémon battles if you don't actually own any Pokémon, and Annie's face is a testimony to that. Not that there's anything wrong with her face, if you like scars. Her eyes, which usually look to be some shade of brownish but tend to react to lighting changes in weird ways, are generally considered pretty by people she is not glaring at.Height: 5'9"
Character Type: Student
Personality:
Annie is not necessarily a very friendly person. She tends to come off as haughty, self-important, and bossy to others, making her hard to work with. She does not speak casually very often, and orders around others--especially others who are younger than herself--easily and as if there is no doubt that she will be obeyed. Few people would be interested in hanging out with her. Fewer still realize why she is like this.Likes:
On the inside, Annie is terribly insecure. She constantly feels alone in a world much too big for her, and doesn't dare let on as much. Her outward seeming is an attempt (one which is very effective in that regard, but which only makes the root problem of her isolation worse) to disguise this in order to allow her to function in a semi-normal manner.
That said, not every aspect of Annie's confidence is faked. She may not have much firsthand experience at battling, but she knows a great deal about it in theory and is excited about finally getting to practice. She is also keenly aware that many of her classmates will in all likelihood have no more experience than she does, so she is comfortable with her odds of winning against them. And even if she does lose from time to time, it's just practice, right? There's always time to train some more and call for a rematch later.
- Tennis + Annie is good at tennis, and will take any opportunity to play. You know, however often that comes up. She would love to travel to Unova someday just to see a match in Nimbasa City.
- Poetry + There's just something about rhyme, meter, and poetic language that stirs her soul.
- Admiration + Annie is hungry for respect. To have someone looking up to her would be a dream come true.
- Pomp and circumstance + Not the song. (OK, the song too.) Annie enjoys seeing fancy ceremonial stuff happen. It entertains her in a certain way, and it's often just so impressive and showy and old-fashioned...
- History + Speaking of old-fashioned. Historical stuff often puts Annie in a state of delighted awe. People have done so many amazing things over the years!
Dislikes:
- Feeling out of control - Helplessness is just a nightmare for Annie. She is terrified that if she isn't in control, something could go horribly wrong at any second. Better to keep a tight hold on as much as she can in order to mimimize risks.
- Being ordered around - For reasons possibly related to the previous item, she hates taking orders. She wants to be in charge of her own life and does not appreciate anyone trying to decide what she does for her.
- Her brother's independent streak - She said she was going to keep him safe! He has to let her! If he doesn't, he could get hurt and ruin things!
- Loud noises, especially loud music - Her poor, sensitive ears! Annie has very good hearing and would really like to keep it that way. Why are some people so inconsiderate to the poor little volume knob?
- Starly - They're everywhere in Sinnoh, so she has seen them often in her life. She was never bothered by them when she was little, but one was responsible for the scar on her face. Bad memories, for certain.
History:
Annie was the eldest child in her family, and to be honest, she was a little spoiled when she was young. Her parents, who had moved to Kalos from Arceus-knows-where* a few years previously, were so happy to finally be parents that they may have somewhat overindulged their little angel. This was the first Annie ever knew of life, and it certainly suited her very well.Dorm: Wave Dorm

When Annie was still a toddler, her father lost his job, and could not find a new one. After some hunting, her mother did find a job--far away, in Sinnoh. A job far away from where they were from was better than neither parent having any job at all, so the family moved to Veilstone City.
They hadn't been in Sinnoh for long when Annie's little brother Robin was born. Annie loved him right away. She did not get jealous that her brother was getting more attention than she was; in fact, much of the time she was the one paying the most attention to him. She had a brother, and that was awesome. Annie had big dreams about what that was going to be like.
For years, everything was perfect as far as Annie was concerned. Like an actress, she played the roles of Good Daughter and Responsible Big Sister and Overachieving Student. She was exceptionally close to her mother and brother, who meant the world to her. She was less close to her father, though their relationship was not bad as such--just a bit distant. What more could she possibly want?
It turned out that there was something, but she didn't realize it until later. When Annie was about ten, her beloved mother became sick suddenly one night. Mother assured her that it was just a cold, and would probably pass soon--but asked a favor of her: "Take care of Robin for me, until I get better. Make sure he doesn't get hurt." Annie promised solemnly that she would.
By the next morning, Mother was dead. And there were doctors involved who used a lot of very technical words in explaining why, but Annie didn't understand any of it. All she could do was cling to her brother, and cry, and promise over and over again that she was going to keep him safe and nothing would ever happen to him while she was there to protect him. She had already promised Mother, and now that Mother wasn't going to get better she would just have to keep her promise forever.
It wasn't going to be that easy, of course. It seemed like nothing was ever going to be easy again. Even simple things like keeping up in school were more difficult than ever before without her mother's support and love. She noticed also that while her father was still caring for her, he seemed to have withdrawn from Robin in a way that frightened her. If she couldn't rely on her father, who would help her protect and care for her brother? And would he abandon her too?
Annie was never truly abandoned by her father, but care of her brother fell directly to her more and more often. The stress took a toll on her, trying to keep him safe while maintaining at least a little of what she needed to be doing. She never considered not doing so; she had promised. And Robin was the one person alive she was closest to; it would destroy her to lose him as well.
Annie was thirteen and Robin was ten, and it wasn't going well. Her hair was starting to go gray from the stress of all that she was trying to do, and she was having trouble ensuring that her brother had enough to eat and wear. And to top it all off, there were some older boys at school picking on him for his shabby old clothes and other signs of imperfect care. They were big boys. They were strong boys. They already had their own Pokémon to back them up. And Annie could not have cared less. With stormclouds gathering in her eyes, she interrupted them and demanded that they leave Robin be. They laughed at her, right up until she punched their ringleader in the face.
No fight between a Trainer and a non-Trainer can ever be truly fair, but this was as close to such a thing as ever could be. Everyone except Annie and the boy whose nose she had just bloodied scattered to a safe distance, terrified of being caught in the fallout. He was a Trainer, and he had a Starly with him--and he used it directly against her. The only reason she lived was because the Starly was weaker even than usual for its species. Annie was caught across the face with a Wing Attack, which cut deep enough to scar, but she wrestled the Starly to the ground to punch it there, then got back up to attack her real enemy again. He seemed to be convinced that she was some kind of demon or something, but they came to blows directly. Then the Starly must have gotten its bearings again, because the last thing she remembers is a feathery flapping sound and a strike, something a lot like a Tackle, hitting the back of her head. Both Annie and the boy she was fighting went down. She woke up in the school nurse's office with bandages on her face and an ice pack strapped to her head.
After that fight, Annie resolved to become a Trainer herself. She had fought a Trainer to a stalemate, yes, but it was obvious that she was not nearly strong enough to oppose any stronger Trainer on her own. The good news was that that particular group of bullies was not going to bother her or her brother again; granted, it was because they thought she wasn't human, but she would settle for what she could get.
Unfortunately, that was the last straw as far as Annie's father was concerned. (He was only Annie's father, as he was being a poor excuse for a father to Robin.) Declaring that Robin's presence was "a bad influence" on Annie, since she was getting into ill-advised fights against stronger opponents now, he sent the boy to live with a cousin all the way away in Unova.
Saying goodbye to Robin was one of the worst days of Annie's life. She had pleaded and sobbed and tried every bargain, every plea she could think of that might let her brother, her lifeline remain, to no avail. And then she perceived that her father had been trying to remove Robin from their lives for all those years and was just waiting for an excuse to make it final, while Annie had poured everything she had into protecting her beloved brother, and she felt even worse. And they were forbidden to write to each other.
After that, Annie felt completely isolated, and despaired. But there were things that she still had to do, so she forced herself to keep going through the motions of a relatively normal life. Her hair finished its change to pure silver, the stress of her despair leeching the last of the color away. And slowly, she put herself back together again.
Only one of Annie's classmates was still willing to talk to her as a human being (as opposed to some kind of terrifying war demon) at that point: a boy called Michael. They became close--"best friends" is not the right term because Annie had no other friends to compare--and came to trust each other. It was a strange experience for Annie, who had hitherto never been so close to anyone who wasn't a relative, but not an unpleasant one. With her friend's help, and keenly aware that she could not even trust her father as far as she trusted Michael after what had happened, she made it through the worst of her grief at the separation. She was not entirely alone.
In an odd way, Annie's father had been sheltering her all this time. She had had so much responsibility at home, but she had been kept at home. It was barely known to her that there were places in Sinnoh which were not like Veilstone City, much less that those places comprised most of the region. She reached fourteen, and then fifteen, without beginning a Pokémon journey. In some ways, that was all right. Veilstone was where the only friend she was allowed to speak to lived, after all. But she began to yearn for more: for the experience of seeing other places, for the freedom to speak or write to whomever she wanted. She wanted a journey, but her father would not allow his little girl to go out alone--especially after that one decision she had made concerning a particularly ill-advised fight. However, he did promise to consider what else could be done.
A year and a half passed, from the time that Robin was sent to Unova to the time Annie saw him again, when their respective guardians took them to meet in Hoenn, of all places, during the summer after she turned fifteen. The separation and what had occurred during it had changed them both. Annie had hardened against the constant sense that she was being looked at oddly, and Robin had gained a new measure of independence. They quarreled, and afterwards Annie retreated to her room to cry. She missed their old closeness so badly.
That was when it was revealed why they were there: because there was an academy nearby where they could go and finally experience some of what made up a journey without so much of the inherent risk. With a bittersweet heart, knowing that she could finally have some freedom and be near her brother again but she would be away from Michael and on poor terms with Robin, Annie agreed. And she sent letters to her friend back home, because at least she was allowed to do that.
