When she was eight, she transferred to another school in the nearby area. While her new school held a higher standard in education, her old school, which had a stricter no-bullying policy, tolerated her eccentricities and treated her fairly.
Her eccentricities and obliviousness to social mores left her a target for teasing and bullying in her new school, something that she did not tell her parents out of fear of causing a misunderstanding. One incident, when she was thirteen, after one teasing too many, she snapped at her classmates, yelling and ranting and threatening to throw things at them.
Her parents, worried about her emotional and mental health, decided to send her to Gray Gardens as a chance to start over.
