Astrid wasn't entire sure she was doing all of this right. It looked right. She'd baited the line of the old, less-than-ideal fishing rod she'd received, and had cast it like she'd seen in TV shows a few times, sending the line out as far as her strength would allow. That, alone, had taken a few tries before she'd figured out how to do it properly. And now, all she could really do to be sure whether she'd screwed up or not was to wait. If she got a bite, she was probably fine. If not...well, she wouldn't have a good way of knowing whether there was a problem or she just needed more patience.
Not without asking an expert, at least. But there wasn't anyone else around at the moment.

"Hm?" Astrid was suddenly jostled out of her thoughts as the line suddenly went taught. She had to tighten her grip on the rod to make sure it couldn't be pulled out of her hands, and started to reel in the hooked pokemon. She managed to reel the fish on the other end in with only a little effort, in part thanks to the pokemon in question not actually being all that strong. But when it landed on the pier, Astrid could only look on it with confusion and a bit of disappointment. Was that...really a fish? It looked more like a heart with a mouth.
"I'll pass. You can go back in the water," Astrid said. She scooped up the heart fish as gently as she could and lowered it back into the water. Then, as it swam off, she re-baited her rod and cast the line out again for another try.
At least she knew now that she was doing it right.

After several more minutes of waiting, the line went taut again and Astrid started reeling in the hooked Pokemon once again. This time, it put up quite a bit more resistance, but it felt less like it was struggling to get away and more like something was dragging it back. And she soon figured out why once she pulled the Pokemon up onto the pier. It had dragged a bunch of seaweed up with it, and at a glance Astrid would have thought it was a part of the seaweed. But then, it got up, looked around, and immediately sprayed water at Astrid.
"H-Hey!" Astrid said, getting out of the way of the stream as quickly as she could. Fortunately, she managed to get away with only being splashed a little bit. But that seaweed Pokemon wasn't getting away without a fight now. "Quadraxis, give it what for!" Astrid said, releasing her Beldum from its pokeball. "Zen Headbutt!" The Beldum gathered psychic energy around its joint and eye, then slammed into the seaweed Pokemon. The blow knocked it back towards the water, but for a sentient mass of plant matter, it was surprisingly capable of stopping itself. It turned its attention on the Beldum, spraying an unpleasant-looking acidic substance at it.
But, much to Astrid's relief, the acid just beaded and rolled off, having no effect on Quadraxis. "Hit it again! Zen Headbutt!" Astrid called. Again, the robot leg of a Pokemon gathered an aura of energy around its 'head', then slammed into the seaweed Pokemon with it. This time, it was successfully knocked back into the water. But instead of taking the chance to swim off, it jumped right back, pulling water behind it and flipping in the air to slam its tail (and a bunch of water) into Quadraxis's body.
Quadraxis took the hit like a champ, though, only losing a little bit of ground before floating right back up and anticipating the next command. By the time Astrid called out "Zen Headbutt!" again, it had already started charging up, and quickly slammed into the seaweed Pokemon again. After the third attack, it flopped against the pier, barely moving. Seeing an opportunity, Astrid pulled out an Academy Ball and threw it at the downed Pokemon.
