To be so young a woman, Mai is quite the ball of fire with high intellect. Mai is not loud in any form or fashion. When upset or stressing a point in arguments, her tone and facial expression command respect. She tends to stay quiet and observe rather than speak. She has always figured that listening was more beneficial than speaking, seeing as though, that seemed to benefit her learning experiences when she was younger. Having many faces for a personality the girl has branched out and learned to mingle in all settings as her father had been able to do in his line of work. Different regions meant different places and people entirely, with their own temperament, however, things normally worked for them. Being the only child, she may have been spoiled a bit, but doesn't come off as bratty and is aware that her family is more fortunate than others. Not one to lie to anyone either, she doesn't sugar coat her words....at all. Therefore, be ready for any type of response when asking a question.
Mai tends to stay calm and cool, leaving others to think she was arrogant in some ways but in reality, she's a realist that calls things as she sees it. Ever the lady through and through, her kindness towards her people differs greatly from what most would expect from the refined grace and air she has about her. Yes, Mai is a polite young woman but at the same time, she is of a generous spirit. At times certain people, may be teased just for her enjoyment and possibly to slightly instigate a situation, however, she is never one to start drama and stick her nose where it doesn't belong. You can always count on her to be true to her word and even if she doesn't like you, she will at least communicate to a degree of being cordial. The regal little lady, known as, Mai Maragion, is the daughter of a historian/researcher and artist. Her father was always talking about the abilities of pokemon and understanding their history, along with their respective legends, even in the different regions. Her mother was always drawing some unique art, in which, Mai always saw as beautiful. There were many different things that could be expressed in history and art and Mai seemed to see the beauty in both. Thus her mind filled with all the creative things she could do with dragon type pokemon. Using the lore from her father and the creativity of her mother, it made quite the combination. Dragons were ancient, piece of never ending history with the different stories and how they changed over the years. In essence she was intrigued by this.
Mai grew up in the city full of history and mystery of the dragon type pokemon in the region. The stores about Reshiram and Zekrom were fresh in her mind and did nothing but make her more curious as she was a curious child from quite a young age. Even then, she was reserved, but around dragon types, she came out of her shell and in a way they helped her find out exactly who she was. Mai was one of the few children handpicked to attend the Opelucid Academy, which was an establishment that the Dragon gym leader ran and even taught from time to time. The dream of becoming one with Dragons was always demonstrated by the headmaster and she was determined to succeed in her own way. Dragons could be used for beauty and other creative things just like her mother’s art but she saw them as more than just pieces to the painting but as actual living beings as well. She made sure never to forget the impact they had on her feelings as she promised she would pay that forward to them.
Mai's father was one of the leading minds in his fields and with the knowledge he held on the many different topics, Mai would listen to him, learning well, as his connections could open doors in many places. However, it was the love for pokemon that made her fall in love with them as well. Both parents used pokemon as their muse and for her mother, with a paint brush and an easel, anything could come to life. Selling the pieces brought in much money for the family while she stayed home with Mai, unless the entire family left. There was much she could grasp from these two individuals, their lives serving as maps for certain landmarks and things of the like.
Moving through the academy with ease, and showing a level of intellect much higher than most her age, Mai studied, hoping to become one with the dragon type pokemon, in order to better herself and learn how to better handle them. Traveling to Lilycove for her mother's art gallery was amazing as her mother painted pokemon that had won the contests. It showed her just how many different categories pokemon could be placed into as well as using a creative mind to put on a show that was made by the participants and their bonds with their pokemon. Seeing this made her want to start coordinating and battling with pokemon, though for her, specifically, Dragon types. Most people didn't use them in the contests much and it seemed to be a bit discouraging, so Mai decided she would take it upon herself to not only learn but to do so with others in a different setting.
After many nights of debating, she finally gave in and told her parents of the decision she had made to attend, Gray Garden Academy. It was definitely not in Hoenn, at all but it gave her a fresh start and it would be an entirely different and new experience from day one for the prodigal child, who definitely inherited her father's brain with her mother's beauty and creativity. After taking that first step and with her parent’s agreement, her new life would begin in the middle of Gray Garden Academy. New people. New environment. Fresh start.
