Name: Kaitlyn Brady
Age: 26
Date of Birth: August 8
Birthplace: Village Bridge, Unova
Gender: Female
Sexual Orientation:Flamer Homosexual
Face Claim: Fujiwara no Mokou - Touhou Project
Appearance:
Distinguishing Features: Burn scars on her back, starting just below the shoulders and running not quite all the way to her waist. Milder ones on her wrists and the back of her hands, as well as on her forehead, normally hidden by her bangs.
Height: 5'8"
Character Type: Teacher - Island Navigation
Personality: Kaitlyn comes off at first as pretty abrasive. While she does at least try to remain professional while teaching, she naturally has a rough way of speaking that frequently comes through. And when not teaching a class, that also includes frequent swearing. Very frequent swearing. She's also open to the point of being blunt with her opinions. If she has a major problem with someone, they will be the first to know it, they will know it fast, and they will know it in the most direct way possible that involves words rather than a swift kick in the ass. Not that she has a problem with giving people a swift kick in the ass, but she tends to draw the line at things that may involve her losing her job. All in all though she's really not the kind of person most people want to have around in polite company.
She doesn't try to be unfriendly, though. Actually, when she's not telling someone off she can be a very friendly person to anyone not put off by her language. She's just...spirited. She puts everything into everything she does, whether it be Pokemon, cooking (don't let the tomboy look fool you, she's an excellent cook. At least when she's allowed to use a grill), or telling people off. While this means she's not the person you want to have telling you how you screwed up and why what you just did was really, really stupid, she's also the life of the party, one of the most spirited Pokemon battlers one could meet, and a strong Type A personality. You know, for people who are into that. And more than the idiots, the (real) assholes, or anyone else she always complains about, it's the slow, gloomy days where she has to keep that spirit restrained that she hates the most.
Since it's bound to be brought up sooner or later, yes, Kaitlyn really likes fire. She's not quite a pyromaniac, but only because that was a phase that she eventually grew out of. But she still likes building fires, sitting by one on a cold night (or any night really), grilling on an open flame, and showing up all those pampered newbies who have never camped a day in their life and don't know how to build one. Speaking from personal experience though, if she catches someone being careless with fire, she will come down on them so hard she might smother said fire with sheer intensity. Those burns on her arms and back are not for show.
On a side note, while she doesn't go whole cliche and sprinkle fire-related vocabulary into everything she says, it still crops up from time to time. For instance, her favorite insult as a kid was "blazing idiot", a phrase she still occasionally uses.
As a teacher, she favors the outdoors and would sooner completely forgo the classroom and hold those sections that absolutely have to be conducted somewhere with decent desk space under a picnic shelter outside if she could. She warns people to always check their e-mails (or, failing that, the bulletin board outside her office) for where each class will be held because, in her own words, "only an idiot would stick a class about exploration indoors all the time".
Likes: Fire, hot food, hot baths, hot girls, hot-blooded kids, exotic wildlife, the smell of a charcoal grill, intense Pokemon battles, extreme environments.
Dislikes: Gloomy weather, nosy people, people who have a problem with her language, assholes, too much attention, being forced to sleep, lukewarm food, people who aren't careful with fires, idiots
History: Kaitlyn was born to Brendon and Aileen Brady, a couple of backpackers who met in the mountains of eastern Unova on a camping trip and kept in touch after returning home and eventually got married. They both lived on opposite sides of the region, but eventually moved to Village Bridge after getting married. Kaitlyn was born there, in a house that would have been completely unremarkable to anyone anywhere were it not for the fact that it was built onto a bridge.
She still doesn't think it's that special. It rained too much.
Her early childhood was about as normal as one could get when both their parents were as much in love with the outdoors as they were each other. She was taken on camping trips from an early age, and through those trips saw most of the Unova region. Or, at least, the wilderness of it. More than the sights, though, she was interested in the skills she would learn on those trips. At first, her parents had to trick her into participating with the promise that if she learned them well she would be allowed to become a trainer and go off on a journey of her own once she got old enough. Soon enough though, she became interested in her own right, and gravitated toward one of them in particular. How to pitch a tent, cook for herself, or tie knots were all well and good, but she really liked making campfires. Within a few years after she was first allowed to try making one on her own, she was better at it than her parents, and bragged to all her (sometimes appropriately) weirded out friends back home that she could start a fire with a single match.
Soon enough though, this came back to bite her during a later camping trip, when she decided while her parents were off sightseeing (she was ten at the time, and like many kids that age was somehow trusted alone in the wilderness) that she was good enough to start a fire without their supervision. Well, she started it with one match, but having not properly cleared the area around it of flammable objects it quickly managed to spread, within minutes she had completely lost control of it. By the time her parents made it back to camp much of it was on fire. Kaitlyn, they found, had managed to make it to the car okay, but was covered in burns of varying severity that she had incurred in a valiant but futile struggle to put the blaze out. Some of those burns would heal in time, while others wouldn't.
Once she had started to recover, Kaitlyn received a very stern lecture about fire safety, and the announcement that she would not be allowed to go on a journey on her own, Pokemon or not, until they were sure she could be trusted to stay safe. Kaitlyn was, naturally, devastated. But somewhere along the way, she had picked up a fiery determination to get what she wanted that led her to bother them incessantly until they finally gave in and compromised with her. Instead of letting her out on her own, they would send her to a private Pokemon academy with a diverse enough environment to simulate a whole region, but one controlled enough to give at least some guarantee of her safety. They settled on Gray Garden Academy, where she started shortly after her twelfth birthday.
Seeing this compromise as a test to prove she could handle herself without another life-threatening accident, Kaitlyn put everything she had into her time at school. To call her an active and enthusiastic student would be an understatement. She wasn't particularly intellectual, and she'd had next to no experience with Pokemon before joining. But she still managed to climb up to the top of her class through sheer force of will. That spirit led to her becoming fairly popular with her classmates as well, at least the ones who could put up with her increasingly rough and direct manner of speaking. At first, she tried to justify the slow change in attitude by claiming she didn't have time to remember how to be pleasant. Eventually though it just became a part of who she was.
Four years later, she graduated with honors and was finally able to achieve her dream of traveling the Unova region as a trainer. And for awhile, she stuck to Unova, occasionally challenging gyms and entering tournaments but mostly just exploring. She wanted to see it all, and wouldn't let any environmental barriers stand in her way. Mountains? She could fly on a tropical dinosaur plant. Caves? Plenty of strong Pokemon to break through obstacles and fire types to light the way in their depths. Waterways and waterfalls? She had a torpedo shark. Ghostly jellyfish-infested oceans? ...She had a torpedo shark. In doing so, she made quite a name for herself among the backpackers of the region. But after awhile, Unova started to seem too small for her, and she set her sights on the rest of the world. So she traveled to other regions. Johto, for its ocean caverns and treacherous mountain terrain. Sinnoh, for its frozen peaks and northern reaches. Hoenn, for its turbulent waterways, dense jungles, and active volcano. Even Orre, for a brief time, although she quickly found that she didn't want to stay there longer than she had to. Then finally, after three, almost four years of traveling, she got called back to Gray Garden to act as a Warden for the Lava Dorm.
She accepted the job, but was never fully satisfied it. She would later recount that she spent too much time dealing with trouble around the dorm and not enough being active around the island. Not to mention the repeated irritation she received from a fellow Warden and old not-quite-friend always managing to have more fun than she did. She stayed on for a couple years, but after that the need for high adventure drew her away again. She told the headmaster that he could call her again if they ever needed a new Island Navigation teacher (assuming she fit the requirements, which she didn't actually look into until later). But other than that possibility, she was done. The world was too big to sit around waiting for a challenge or for the next thing to go wrong.
And so she left, and continued to travel the world until she had, at minimum, visited all the major regions. (Or at least the ones she cared about.) It was only after a few more years and the realization that she had irreversibly transitioned into adulthood and had to occasionally do things other than adventuring that she started to settle down. Never completely, of course, and never even as much as she felt forced to during her Warden days. But part of that was learning to better manage her time. Get work down, get out, have fun. Something learned from an old not-quite-friend, but never really put into practice until it actually became necessary. And that was when Mr. Bryce Wright finally took Kaitlyn up on her last offer, and invited her back to Gray Garden one more time.
Suffice to say, she was not entirely certain that she knew what she was doing as a teacher. Her first drafts at a lesson plan or two, written up within hours of accepting the job, proved that. But after awhile of pondering the subject and a good round of riding her Aerodactyl to get adrenaline running, she settled on just doing the job the same way she always did things. Her own way.
