Silent Snow [MOD]

It was his first day at the Academy, and Benji had been heading to his dorm...until he noticed the beautiful snowy mountains. He knew it was better to get himself settled in, instead of exploring right away but he couldn't help it. He'd always loved the cold weather, the colder the better. Even in light clothing it didn't bother him, in fact it cleared his mind and invigorated him. He took a deep breath of the icy air, letting it clear his head and seep into his skin. He let out a long deep sigh of content, watching as his breath shot out like steam, spiraling up into the air and vanishing. He let out a chuckle and rolled his shoulders a bit before trudging on through the snow.
It was still quite early in the morning so it wouldn't hurt exploring a bit before heading to the Mana Dorm. Plus it was his first day, it wasn't like he was missing much...right? Well it was too late now anyway. He was here and he wasn't going to waste his time.
The area was eerily silent, the snow blinding as the sun burned brightly above. It didn't seem like many people came here. Sure it was freezing, and most people didn't like it this cold...but it was beautiful and he was surprised how desolate it was. Shrugging he began climbing an icy slope, carefully watching his steps so he wouldn't slip. Breaking a limb on his first day wouldn't be the best idea now would it? He was nearing the top of this snowy hill when he heard something. "Hmm, wonder what that could be?" He muttered into the cold air as he continued up.

As Benji neared the top of the hill, he noticed the noise turned out to be splashing. It grew louder and louder until finally a small partly frozen pond came into view. Most of it was frozen, but a small portion was thawed letting the icy blue water flow around. The sun hit it at a certain angle, making it glisten beautifully and for a moment Benji was captivated by the sight. That was until a freezing splash of ice water hit him in the face.
"What the?!" he growled as he wiped off his face and shook the water droplets from his dark hair. He glared in the direction of the splash and was surprised to see a small Seel staring back at him. It's fins were partly in the water and it was still moving them playfully ready to splash again.
"Hey now...no need for that," Benji said holding his hands up in surrender. The Seel blankly stared at him for a few more moments before slipping into the cool waters. It flipped on it's back and lazily began to float around the small space. "Hmm..." Benji muttered quietly as he watched the Pokemon. It would be an easy catch for sure, should he really pass up a chance like this? His hand inched up towards the belt around his waist, and he begun to unhook a Pokeball when the sound of crunching snow stopped him.
A large Dewgong waddled up from the other side of the hill, not noticing Benji at first. It approached the Seal with a soft look in it's eyes and at that moment he realized it was the Mother. He let his hand fall from his belt and stood there quietly. The young Seel happily yipped as it saw it's Mother return, splashing her playfully. She slipped into the water and swam around the smaller Pokemon a bit. It wasn't until that moment that she noticed they weren't alone. She glanced up at Benji with a curious yet guarded look, as if she was ready to attack and protect her young if needed.
"Don't worry, I was just passing through," he said softly, bowing his head slightly and headed back down the hill. He couldn't bring himself to take the Seel away from it's family, that wouldn't be right. He was sure there were other Pokemon out here that he could catch. Plus there was a lot more sight seeing to be done. He noticed an entrance to some sort of icy cavern not too far away and headed inside. He was sure to find something interesting in here.

This cavern was amazing. Walls lined with vivid smooth blue ice, the water frozen there for probably millions of years. Benji let his fingers slide across the cool surface as he continued down the narrow pathway. It was pretty much silent inside apart from the occasional dripping heard from deeper in the cave. If he wasn't a student, he wouldn't mind actually living in here. Yes it was cold...but it was almost magical, and a great place to think. He closed his eyes and just imagined what he could find if he spent weeks exploring this place. But of course that couldn't happen, because he was a student and he couldn't just hide out here forever.
As he rounded a corner he noticed a large gray rock that looked out of place against the rest of the icy blue. It almost seemed alive and with curious eyes Benji lightly kicked it with his boot. Suddenly the rock shook, sprouting arms and spinning around. Shocked, Benji took a few surprised steps back and almost slipped on the ice below him. Keeping his balance he composed himself, and realized the rock was not just a rock...but a Geodude! He had never seen one in real life before, only in books, but it was just as he imagined it. The rock Pokemon was glaring at him, most likely mad at being woken up.
"Sorry, sorry!" Benji said with a grin and slowly walked around it. "Go back to sleep I won't bother you." He quickly passed the angry Geodude and took a turn down another pathway deeper into the cavern. This path brought him into a huge expanse of the cave. Holes in the ceiling let in light making the whole area sparkle brightly. There was a few small pools of water, and even what looked like a frozen waterfall. "Awesome," Benji whispered as he ventured deeper inside to explore.

The frozen waterfall standing before him was enormous. He wondered what it had been like when it was thawed probably thousands of years ago...or even longer than that. He imagined the cavern without ice, with beautiful running water and greenery. Or perhaps it was always frozen like this. He approached the waterfall, reaching forward itching to touch his fingers to it's cool surface. Just as his slim fingers were inches from the ice a noise froze him in his place. It was coming from behind the waterfall, and it was coming fast.
Benji quickly took a few big steps back, grabbing a Pokeball off his belt and holding it tightly with anticipation. The noise continually got louder until a flash of white shot out from behind the frozen water and jumped up onto a high rocky ledge about ten feet up to his right. It took a moment for Benji's wide eyes to focus on what it actually was, and when he did his mouth hung open in surprise. "Is...is that an Absol?" He said quietly not to scare the large Pokemon. He reached slowly into his back pocket, taking out his Pokedex and pointing it towards what he was pretty sure was an Absol. The Pokedex beeped and a robotic female voice spoke into the quiet cavern. "Absol, a dark type Pokemon. Known as the "Doom Bringer" by some. It appears from deep in the mountains to warn people about upcoming disasters it has sensed with its horn." Benji shut the Pokedex, and looked around the cavern cautiously.
Disaster? Was this cave going to collapse or something? No...it was just a coincidence. It had to be. Benji gulped loudly, getting quite nervous as the Absol stared at him intensely. Suddenly a loud cracking noise sounded above him, just as he looked up a jagged icicle, probably weighing fifty pounds or more came crashing down right at him. Moving quickly, Benji rolled out of the way just in time as the heavy ice smashed into the ground right where he had been standing moments before. His heart was beating so hard in his chest he felt as if it would explode. Taking a deep breath he gained his composure and looked back up. The Absol looked calmer, still staring at him with interested eyes.
He looked at the Pokeball still grasped tightly in his hand and grinned. "You saved me...you would be a great addition to my team." He looked back up. "But I know you won't go without a fight will you?" The look the Absol gave him was definitely a yes. It jumped down gracefully landing in front of him, ready for a battle.
"Very well, let's see what you got!" Benji clicked the button on his Pokeball and after a bright flash of white light, Duncan, his Charmander was standing next to him. Duncan looked around curiously, letting out a little shiver from the cold. As soon as he noticed the Wild Pokemon though he forgot about the cold and focused himself. "Come on Duncan, this is our first battle. Let's show this Absol what we've got!" Duncan nodded and the Absol prepared itself. "Start off with an Ember attack now!" Duncan nodded and opened his mouth, a moment later searing hot flames shot out of his mouth and sped right towards the Absol. Just as the flames were about to hit the white Pokemon jumped up back on it's rocky perch, the flames missing and hitting the icy rock.
"Nice one," Benji chuckled. This Absol was smart, he wouldn't be able to just directly hit him. He would have to think of something else. But before he could even come up with an idea the Absol leaped off of the ledge, his large sharp horn glinting as he aimed a Slash attack. "Watch out Duncan!" Benji yelled, but it was too late. Duncan tried to dodge but the Absol was too fast. His Charmander slipped, missing part of the blow, but still got hit hard enough to do quite a bit of damage. "Are you okay?" Benji said worried as Duncan slowly got to his feet. The orange Pokemon nodded, glaring at his opponent. Absol was fast, really fast. They needed to find a way to hit him. "I got it. Duncan use Smokescreen!" Duncan grunted in acknowledgement and breathed out a thick dark cloud of smoke right at his opponent. Absol pretty much disappeared and Benji was sure the Pokemon could not see inside of that black cloud of smoke.
This was their chance. "Duncan hurry, you remember exactly where he was standing right?" Duncan nodded, not taking his eyes off of the point. "Go now, use Fire Fang!" Duncan didn't wait another second and leaped straight into the cloud of smoke. The only thing Benji saw was a flash of fire and then everything went quiet. The smoke slowly dissipated, and when it cleared he could see Duncan standing over a fallen Absol. It was still concious, laying on it's side and staring straight at Benji. The look it gave him wasn't anger or fear but almost as if he was impressed. Benji knew this was the right time now. He swiftly grabbed an empty Pokeball off of his belt and tossed it at the Absol who was then enveloped in a bright flash of light. In his place was a Pokeball that rolled back and forth. Benji awaited for it to either stop or for the Absol to reappear.

To his surprise after a few more rolls of the ball it burst open, and after a flash of bright light Absol reappeared. Seeming to have gained his composure, the wild Pokemon shook his head and got back to his feet. I must have not injured it enough. Benji thought to himself as he scratched his head in disappointment. Duncan was surprised as well, running back over to his trainer and standing defensively. Benji didn't want the Absol to recover completely though, so they needed to be fast. "Duncan, Slash now!" The Charmander shot forward aiming a large slash at his opponent. The Absol seemed caught off guard, not thinking they would attack so soon. Not able to dodge the poor Pokemon got hit directly with the attack. The Absol lost his balance, falling to the ground in pain. Yet it still didn't give up. Slowly it got back to it's feet and gave out a low growl of defiance. Rounding on Duncan, the Absol gave no warning as he jumped forward sending a swift Sucker Punch right into the unaware Charmander.
It hit dead on and Duncan rolled onto the ground. Benji grew worried when he didn't get up right away. "Duncan...buddy, you okay?" He said as he walked over to check. But before he could even get over to the fallen Pokemon Duncan stood up. He was breathing hard and looked in obvious pain but was not ready to get up. The Absol looked exhausted as well. Either way, this battle wouldn't last much longer. "Duncan, finish it off with Ember and hurry!" Benji shouted. Out of the corner of his eye he saw bright flames shooting out as they flew straight at the injured Absol. Still with a defiant look in it's eyes it stood it's ground staring directly at the incoming flames. Yet it didn't even try to dodge...and Benji was amazed.
The Ember attack hit a moment later and the Absol didn't even cry out in pain. Smoke drifted off his white pelt as he collapsed onto the ice covered ground of the cavern. Amazingly it hadn't fainted, but Benji didn't think it would be able to get out of the ball this time. "That was a great fight, both of you," he said softly as he threw another Pokeball at the fallen Pokemon and waited.

The Pokeball continued to rock back and forth for a few more seconds before finally coming to a stop. A finishing loud click sealed the deal. Duncan let out a growl of victory before sitting down in obvious exhaustion. "Good job, take a rest you deserve it," Benji said smiling as he returned the Charmander. He leaned down scooping the ball up with his newly caught Absol and smiled widely. This was his first Pokemon capture and first battle and it had been amazing. "You've found a good home, and I know you'll do great on my team."
With a skip in his step, Benji turned and made his way out of the icy cavern. It was about noon-time and he knew he needed to get to his dorm and settle in. He couldn't wait to see what new adventures awaited him.
